FAQs

We’re always happy to help with any queries you may have but, to save you some time, we have compiled a selection of the most regularly asked questions regarding how to care for your carpet. If you have any other questions, please feel free to call, email or use our live chat feature. Acorn Carpet Cleaning is delighted to help and offer our advice.

How often should I have my carpets cleaned?

Most manufacturers recommend that carpets are professionally cleaned by a qualified technician every 12-18 months. Carpets should be cleaned on a regular basis and before they become heavily soiled. Allowing soil to build up will significantly reduce the life of a carpet.

I have a spillage on my carpet, is there anything I can try before calling a professional?

Whilst it is highly recommended that a professional cleaner is used there are of course many items available to the public that are advertised for carpet and upholstery cleaning, some of which may well do the trick on a small, water based, spillage. However when it comes to the really tricky stains we all know these products just don’t cut it. If you have a small spot you want cleaned, and not your whole carpet, then just get in touch and we can come round and remove it for you, no problem!

How much do you charge?

Pricing will vary depending on many factors including the length of time the work will take, the size of the area needing cleaned and the level of soiling in the carpet or upholstery. There are a host of other factors that also must be taken into account but we always provide you with the most competitive quote we possibly can whilst still offering a great service that is worth the cost to the customer. We always like to view the carpets or upholstery in person before providing a quotation but we can give you a rough estimate over the phone if this is what you need. We have a range of packages that cater to almost any budget so don’t ever be afraid to call!

What are the differences between the methods of cleaning and which method is best?

All cleaning methods are designed to produce good results and each has its place within the industry. Some methods use more water and others more mechanical action. More important however, is whether the employed technician has the required training to carry out the cleaning properly and safely. We have a recognised qualification in carpet and upholstery cleaning and have been trained on the use of all cleaning methods. We will be able to advise on the most appropriate method, or combination of methods, for your situation.

Will my carpets re-soil quicker following cleaning?

Today’s chemicals and detergents are manufactured to the highest specifications for quality and effectiveness. As professional cleaners, we will only use detergents designed for the removal of soil from carpets and upholstery and, when used correctly, these will not lead to any rapid re-soiling. Detergents that are not designed for use on carpets and upholstery may cause re-soiling problems.

Do you use chemicals to clean?

In all forms, the best cleaning results are achieved by the use of chemicals. We may use solvents, powders, detergents and other solutions during the cleaning process. Manufacturers in the cleaning industry work to the highest specifications for quality and safety, designing products specifically for the cleaning of carpets and soft furnishings; and for safe use within the domestic environment. If you have asthma or are chemically sensitive, we may be able to use specialist chemicals designed to avoid causing any discomfort. We also offer environmentally friendly services with specific ‘Green’ cleaning products.

I have children/pets, will they be affected by cleaning processes/chemicals?

Health and safety is of paramount importance in the cleaning industry. Professional cleaning solutions are tested for their effects on the environment and occupants of areas in which they will be used. We will also ensure that the relevant safety procedures are followed during the cleaning process. It is highly recommended that children and pets stay off of a damp carpet until it is completely dry, this will help prevent slip and fall hazards as well as tracking in fresh soil.

How long will my carpet or furniture take to dry and how soon will it be back in use?

Drying time depends on many conditions, including how soiled the item was, how much water was used, weather conditions, indoor atmosphere, etc. However, in most normal cases, carpets and soft furnishings should be dry within 2-3 hours. If drying is a concern mention it to us and we will be able to advise on drying times and, if required, use some specialist techniques to speed up the process. Please note that there is usually an extra charge for this service.

Is there a risk of shrinkage?

If a carpet is properly installed, it is very rare that the cleaning process will cause it to shrink. We will carry out a full inspection prior to any cleaning and test for potential problems such as shrinkage.

Will all the stains come out?

No guarantee can be made that any particular stain will be removed. Some stains permanently damage the carpet fibres and no amount of specialist cleaning will reverse this. We have received advanced training for spot and stain removal and will be able to deal with most problems. If you have a stain you are concerned about, discuss it with us beforehand and we will be happy to advise. We will always let you know before hand if we don’t think we can remove a particular stain.

Will professional cleaning affect the protector on my carpet/will it need to be re-applied afterwards?

It is important to note that a protector will wear off of any carpet that is in use. Walking, vacuuming, general wear and cleaning will all have an effect on this. Carpet protectors shield the fibres, they are designed to prevent spillages, dropped items and other general wear affecting the carpet directly. However, in doing so it will lose some of its effectiveness and should be re-applied on a regular basis to ensure continued protection.

Do I have to move furniture?

Not if you don’t want to. It’s up to you whether you would like to have the furniture removed from the room you are looking to have cleaned or if you would like to have it remain and be cleaned around. If you would like the room cleared of furniture before the cleaning process begins then our staff are more than happy to do this for you. There is no additional charge for this service unless the time taken to remove the furniture is incredibly long, however we are yet to charge a customer for this service as of yet. The only piece of furniture we will not move are television sets.

Do carpet-cleaning companies have to be registered with the National Carpet Cleaners Association?

No, it is not mandatory for carpet cleaning companies to become members of the NCCA. Whilst we would never say a company outwith the NCCA cannot be trusted it is a good parameter for knowing the kind of business you are dealing with. Joining the NCCA involves all staff members going through training and tests to ensure that each and every staff member knows exactly how to deal with any and all jobs put in front of them as well as knowing what chemicals can cause damage to particular types of material. If a company is not part of the NCCA they might have no formal training what so ever, may not do a job that upholds industry standards or even worse they could ruin your carpets and upholstery. This is why we would always recommend using a reputed company who are part of the NCCA, whether that be Acorn Carpet Cleaning or one of our other qualified colleagues in the industry.

I had the 50 year old carpet in my hallway and lounge deep cleaned to see if I could avoid having to replace it completely. Acorn Carpet Cleaning came out and within a couple of hours you would think I’d had a new carpet put down, and for a fraction of what it would have cost to have the carpets replaced.
